The Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) is proud to announce that 38 of our schools are recognized for the California Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Coalition for 2022-2023. PBIS is an evidence-based, tiered framework for supporting students’ behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health. When implemented with fidelity, PBIS improves social-emotional competence, academic success, and school climate. It also enhances teacher health and well-being. It is a way to create positive, predictable, equitable, and safe learning environments where everyone thrives.
Schools Implementing PBIS:
- Use a continuum of evidence-based practices to support student needs.
- Engage students, families, and community members to co-create culturally responsive practices.
- Regularly check the effectiveness of their practices.
- Rely on teams to guide implementation.
- Use data to identify strengths, uncover needs, and monitor student progress.
- Implement universal screening.
- Develop content expertise through coaching and ongoing professional development.
PBIS is an ongoing commitment to supporting students, educators, and families through systems change. When implemented, students experience improved behavioral, social, emotional, and academic outcomes; schools and programs reduce their use of exclusionary discipline practices and enhance their overall climate.
Moreover, PBIS schools organize their evidence-based behavioral practices and systems into an integrated collection or Multi-Tier System of Supports Framework, in which students experience support based on their behavioral responsiveness to intervention. This framework consists of three tiers:
- Tier 1: Universal interventions, emphasizing modeling, teaching, and acknowledging positive social, emotional, and behavioral skills.
- Tier 2: Targeted interventions for students needing additional social, emotional, and behavioral support, including practices such as social skills groups, self-management, and academic support.
- Tier 3: Individualized interventions for students and parents needing additional social, emotional, and behavioral support. Students receive more intensive, individualized support to improve their behavioral and academic outcomes.
Each school’s recognition is based on the seven criteria provided by the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports Coalition. To be recognized, schools undergo evaluation through a tiered fidelity inventory (TFI) score.
