The Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) is thrilled to announce the grand opening of not just one but two community schools within our district for the 2023-24 school year. Palomar Elementary School and Harborside Elementary School have been transformed into vibrant community hubs, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment for students, families, and the wider community.
"The transformation of Palomar and Harborside Elementary into community schools represents our unwavering commitment to providing a holistic education that extends beyond the classroom,” said Superintendent Eduardo Reyes, Ed.D. “By partnering with the community, we aim to create enriching environments where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Both community schools will be examples of learning and collaboration, empowering our students and strengthening community bonds.”
Principal Patricia Magaña, Ed.D. of Palomar Elementary, shares her enthusiasm, saying, "The opening of Palomar Elementary as a community school marks a new chapter of our school’s legacy. Palomar will not just be a place of learning, but the heart of the community.”
Principal Vanessa Lerma, Ed.D. of Harborside Elementary, adds, "Harborside Elementary is thrilled to open our doors as a community school. Through the new program, we will be able to address the unique needs of our students and families.”
The Community School Program aims to develop a student and family-centered hub beyond traditional education. Community schools integrate additional services into the school framework, offering extended learning opportunities and fostering community partnerships. These changes reflect the unique priorities of each school, determined through comprehensive surveys, focus groups, and Community School Steering Committees, which include students, families, and staff. Our Community School Program will catalyze positive change, fostering a sense of belonging and ensuring every student has the resources to thrive in the 21st century.
