We have a saying in education: a child’s first teachers—their first role models—are their parents. Parents play a major role in the success of their children, and by extension the success of our schools.
We know that a number of factors impact parent engagement/parent attendance at school events and activities. This includes access to services offered in the native language of families. Another factor is childcare. Parents often have younger children, and may not have suitable care available for them to be able to attend school activities, meetings or be able to access services offered at school.
District staff and school-site teams continually explore innovative ways to increase parent participation. This is an ongoing process that includes seeking ideas and suggestions from parents themselves. Our goal is for parents to gain valuable information regarding diverse tools, strategies, and resources to help nurture students’ academic, social, and emotional development. We encourage all parents to get involved in school activities for these three key reasons:
• Parent involvement first and foremost is about the children.
• Parent involvement boosts student achievement.
• Parents are partners with us in education.
