CVESD Multi-Tiered System of Supports

At the Chula Vista Elementary School District, we provide our students with a holistic and supportive educational experience. Our focus on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) underscores our commitment to creating a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment for all.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

PBIS is a proactive approach that promotes positive behavior and prevents behavioral challenges. Our school community embraces PBIS as a foundation for cultivating a culture of respect, responsibility, and kindness. We believe that emphasizing positive behaviors can create a school environment that fosters academic growth and personal development.

Key Elements of PBIS:

  1. Clear Expectations: We establish clear, consistent, and positive behavior expectations throughout our schools. These expectations are communicated to students, staff, and families, ensuring a shared understanding of our core values.
  2. Recognition and Reinforcement: Through PBIS, we celebrate and acknowledge students' positive actions and attitudes. By providing regular recognition and reinforcement, we encourage a sense of pride and motivation in our students.
  3. Data-Driven Decision Making: PBIS relies on data to identify patterns and trends in student behavior. We use this information to tailor our interventions effectively and make informed decisions that support the overall well-being of our students.
  4. Tiered Interventions: PBIS offers a tiered system of support, providing targeted interventions for students who may require additional guidance. By addressing challenges early on, we strive to prevent more significant behavioral issues from arising.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)

SEL is an integral part of our curriculum, emphasizing the development of essential social and emotional skills that help students navigate life's challenges successfully. Through SEL, we equip our students with the tools they need to manage emotions, build positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. We align our practices to the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) Core Competencies.

CASEL Core Competencies of SEL:

  1. Self-Awareness: Students learn to recognize and understand their emotions, strengths, and areas for growth. This self-awareness fosters confidence and a sense of identity.
  2. Self-Management: SEL equips students with techniques to regulate their emotions, set goals, and persevere through challenges, promoting resilience and self-discipline.
  3. Social Awareness: Empathy and understanding of others' perspectives are emphasized, creating a compassionate and inclusive school community.
  4. Relationship Skills: SEL teaches students effective communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution, promoting healthy and positive relationships.
  5. Responsible Decision Making: By evaluating the consequences of their actions, students learn to make ethical and responsible decisions inside and outside the classroom.

At the Chula Vista Elementary School District, PBIS and SEL work together to provide a well-rounded educational experience that nurtures students' academic growth and personal development. We are fostering a generation of compassionate, responsible, and resilient individuals ready to make a positive difference in the world.
